Easy Oilcloth Wallet

Easy Oilcloth Wallet

Sewing labels onto easy sewing projects makes them perfect as gifts for family members. An easy sewing project that is a great gift is the oilcloth wallet. Even better is the fact that these are easy enough to sew for beginners, in little time.

You’ll need:

  • Sewing machine
  • Denim needle
  • 12×12 inch square oilcloth
  • Cotton or poly thread in a matching color
  • Ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Tape
  1. Cut out a 6×8 and a 2.5×8 inch piece of the oilcloth. Use rotary cutters for this, as the lines come out straighter, and it does less damage to the fabric.
  2. Fold the large piece of fabric in half lengthwise with right sides touching. Make a crease so it stays. At the edges opposite the center, fold in the right side at 1/4 of an inch (wrong sides touching). Fold 1/4 inch of each side of the smaller fabric to match the larger one.
  3. Sew the folded in sections. These are the “hems.”
  4. Take the 2.5×8 inch piece and place it over the right side of the larger piece. Line up the bottom with the crease made in step #2. Tape the fabric in place and sew right under the hems you made in step #3.
  5. Measure the dead center of the wallet on the wrong side. Stitch a fold line at this center point. Do not forget to backstitch here.
  6. Crease the wallet with the right sides together and tape them in place. Sew at 1/4 of an inch from the edge, while taking care to backstitch.
  7. Trim the edges and turn wallet right side out. Poke the corners out using a pointed tool.
  8. Sew in a name label somewhere. Flatten the wallet by placing items in it and carrying it around in a pocket.
